Date: November 15th  11am - 3pm.

November 16th, Open house 10am - 3pm.  Awards 3pm.

Registration Fee -  $40

The first 50 people to register will receive a goody bag once their cake is dropped off.  Goody bags will only be given out once your cake is dropped off.   

Only one goody bag per person.  

Icing Inspirations 10th Annual Cake Art Competition

 

Rules and Regulations  (Please be sure to fully read and print a copy for your reference) 

This year there will be three skill level divisions for the cake divisions: HOBBYIST, INTERMEDIATE, and PROFESSIONAL.

This year the cake competition is a tiered cake competition.   

In addition to the cake divisions we will have a cookie division and gingerbread division.   (please see separate registration page to register)

The theme is Christmas, you could go with something that captures the magic, warmth, and festive spirit of the holiday season.  This could be something that you view as a wedding cake, a birthday cake, a cake that tells as story.  The sky is the limit as long as it fits a Christmas theme and the tiered requirements below:

Professional Division 

-          Minimum 3 tiered cake

-          Must be a minimum 12” tall

-          Cake board must fit onto a 20” square board.

Intermediate Division 

-          Minimum 3 tiered cake

-          Must be a minimum 12” tall

-          Cake board must fit onto a 20” square board.

Hobbyist Division 

-          Minimum 2 tiered cake

-          Must be a minimum 8”  tall

-          Cake board must fit onto a 20” square board.

 

General Category Rules 

  1. Entries may be done out of cake or Styrofoam.   If done with Styrofoam tiers it must be obvious that it could be recreated in real cake.  
  2. Rice cereal treats are permitted but may be no more than 25% of entry
  3. Any sugar medium is accepted for use as decoration.
  4. Decorations may not consist of non-edible or commercially produced product including ribbons, fresh flowers or premade decorations.   All items on the cake must be edible with the exception of wires in gumpaste flowers, stamens, floral tape, internal structures and cake boards.   You may finish your cake board with ribbon but it may not be used to decorate your cake otherwise.  
  5. Wires used in gumpaste flowers should be properly inserted into your cake with an approved barrier method.  If your cake is styrofoam, obvious representation that you would use a proper barrier should be present.   (If you need tips on how this should be done please feel free to contact us.)
  6. Details and decor of your cake should not pass or overhang the edges of the board. 
  7. Please make sure you have read and understand the category description as well as which division you must enter.   If the judges deem you have not entered the correct division your entry may be moved to a different division at the judge’s discretion.    If your entry does not meet the requirements of the division you have been moved to you may be docked points or disqualified.   If you have questions about which division you should be entering into please do not hesitate to call 519-576-3364.
  8. Contestants may enter multiple pieces but cannot enter multiple pieces in the same category (IE - can only enter once in Christmas Cake, once in cookie, once in gingerbread.) 
  9. All entries must be the sole work of the contestant.   Pieces that have been completed as a team will not be permitted.  Entries must not have been completed in a class or as part of a class project or assignment.   Entries must not have been entered or judged in any other competition.  This also pertains to decorative elements from a past cake - do not use pieces from a past cake on your competition piece. 
  10. Entries will be accepted at the venue Saturday November 15th from 11am until 3pm.     Entries received after 3pm on November 15th will not be permitted.  Please factor in set up time.   You will be asked to leave the building at 3pm so that judging can begin.
  11. Please note until entries have been judged the entries will be kept anonymous to the judges.  We ask that you not post your entries on the internet until after the judging has taken place.   Business cards and advertising are not permitted.
  12. The decision of the judges is final.  
  13. Entries may not be removed until the awards ceremony has finished.   Icing Inspirations and Too Nice to Slice are not responsible for any damages done to entries.
  14. All entries must be removed after the awards ceremony.  Entries CANNOT be removed until after 4pm on November 16th. Entries MUST be removed between 4pm and 5pm on November 16th, 2025.  The hall may charge a fee for disposable of any large items left behind.  Contestant is responsible for fee if the hall deems it too large to dispose of in their normal manner. 
  15. Judging will take place on Saturday evening and awards ceremony will be held at 3pm on November 16th, 2024.  Contestants do not have to be present to qualify for an award.
  16. The first 50 registrants will be eligible to receive a goody bag generously put together by out sponsors.   You MUST enter a cake to receive this goody bag.   Entries will be counted in the order that forms are received in the months leading up to the competition - goody bags will not be handed out until your cake is dropped off.   
  17. Photographs of the event will be taken by Icing Inspirations.   By participating in this competition you agree that photos of you and/or your cake may be used in promotional material.
  18. Entry fees are non-refundable.  If you drop out you will not receive your entry fee back in any form or your goody bag.
  19. In the event Icing Inspirations needs to cancel the competition entry fees will be refunded as a gift card. 

 

 

Marking Criteria

Entries will be marked on the following criteria:

-          Originality and creativity (15 points) 

-          Difficulty (20 points) 

-          Interpretation of colour and theme (15 points) 

-          Number of Techniques Used (15 points) 

-          Quality and precision of workmanship (20 points)

-          Overall eye appeal (15 points) 

A total out of 100 points will be awards.   Gold (90-100 points), Silver (80-89 points), Bronze (70-79 points) and Honourable Mention (60-69 points).

Since entries will be kept anonymous from the judges please do not include any distinguishing marks on your entry.  Entries with distinguishing marks will be disqualified.  

 

How do I know which category I should enter in?

You must enter the professional division if you have done any of the following:

-          teach or instruct or have previously taught or instructed any cake decorating or sugar art class

-           earn 50% or more of your income from cake decorating or sugar craft

-          have ever judged a cake competition

You must enter the intermediate division if you have done any of the following:

-          if you have not done any of the items listed above for professional you may consider the intermediate division

-          if you receive or have received monetary compensation for your cakes    

You may enter the hobbyist division if you meet the following criteria:

-          you do not meet any of the criteria listed above you may enter the hobbyist division
